How Much It Costs to Elope to Scotland: A Quick Guide.
There is a reason Scotland captures the heart and imagination so completely. The sweeping vistas of the Highland’s landscapes, ancient castles rising from the mist, dramatic coastlines battered by the sea, historic city streets and quiet lochs reflecting endless skies all combine to create something pretty special. For couples craving something more intimate, personal, intentional, and unforgettable, a Scotland elopement offers the chance to strip away expectations and celebrate love in its purest form.
A History
Ive been working on elopements in Scotland for over 15 years and have photographed (and helped plan) around 400 elopements during this time for couples from all over the World and from all walks of life. I was born in Edinburgh and still have a love affair with this country, the landscape, the history and the culture. Ive spent a lot of time travelling and exploring the length and breadth of Scotland, from hiking & camping in the remote Cairngorm mountains from the age of 5, to rock-climbing, trail running, Winter mountaineering, biking and also the odd bum shuffle down a piste on my snowboard! I also love to visit historic sites, our quiet Scottish Borderlands and our amazing cities (I live about 20mins from Edinburgh). This passion for my homeland is the reason I continue be inspired to create, to build these stories and to help guide couples on their elopement journey.

Why Should We Elope to Scotland?
A Scotland elopement is about freedom. Weddings are amazing gathering’s and I love to shoot both, but for some couples eloping offers something different. Freedom from rigid timelines, guest lists, and traditions that perhaps don’t feel like you. Instead, you get to create a day that reflects your story — whether that means hiking into the Highlands at sunrise, exchanging vows on a quiet beach, or standing hand-in-hand beneath a centuries-old castle.

Celebrant and Legalities: £250+
One of the wonderful things about a Scotland elopement is how accessible the legal process is.
Legal Marriage in Scotland
Scotland allows couples to marry almost anywhere, including outdoors, as long as the location is approved and paperwork is submitted correctly.
Typical legal costs include:
- Marriage Certificate: £10
- Marriage notice fees: around £45 per person (£90)
- Registrar/Humanist Celebrant Fees: approximately £150–£450+ depending on type of celebrant, ceremony, location and day
- Marriage Visitor Visa: £127 to Apply. (required if non UK citizens)
A Marriage Visitor Visa will also be required should you wish to marry legally and you are from outwith the UK
This brings the total for a legal registered ceremony to between £250–£675+
Symbolic Ceremony with a Scottish Humanist Celebrant
Many couples opt for a symbolic ceremony led by a Humanist celebrant, these ceremonies tend to be more involved than a registrar, focusing on personal vows and storytelling and can be deeply moving. Couples then complete the legal paperwork separately. I work with a lot of couples from outwith the UK (Mostly US), often the visa situation is tricky so they opt for a symbolic ceremony (complete with Scottish traditions like hand fasting, Oathing stone, Quaich etc)
Celebrant fees typically range from £350–£750+, depending on experience, travel, and ceremony customisation.
A good Humanist celebrant can help craft a ceremony that feels intimate, meaningful, and entirely your own — something that resonates deeply in the wild Scottish landscape.
Without Officiant
Alternatively, some couples choose to not include an officiant at all. Preferring to read their personalised vows (and perhaps include traditional elements like Oathing stone/Handfast) between themselves. This of course, is the free option and can be just as heartfelt and moving!
This brings the total for a symbolic ceremony to between £0-£750+
Accommodation: £100+ per Night
Accommodation is a big part of the Scotland elopement experience. Where you stay becomes part of the story.
Options include:
- Cosy B&Bs and inns: £100–£180+ per night
- Boutique hotels: £180–£300+ per night
- Luxury hotels, lodges, or castle stays: £350–£500+ per night
Most couples book a minumum of 3–4 nights, allowing time to arrive, elope, and then slow down and celebrate afterwards.
Budgeting £300–£1,500+ for accommodation is realistic depending on style, location and season.
Car Hire/Travel – £20+ per day
We have great public transport in Scotland and if based in one of our cities you may not need a car, but if you want to make the most of your stay and are keen to access those stunning remote and wild backdrops and mountain areas its worth considering hiring.
Many of the most romantic locations — from misty glens to lochside ruins — are far from train stations and tour routes, so having your own wheels gives you the freedom to move at your own pace, chase the light between showers, and stop whenever the scenery demands it (which it will). A hire car also makes your stay feel more relaxed and personal: whether you’re driving to a cosy Highlands cottage, or a celebratory dinner afterwards, the journey becomes part of the experience — just the two of you, a winding road, and Scotland unfolding around you.
In terms of cost, daily hire rates can vary a lot by season and vehicle type, but you can expect economy cars from roughly £20–£30 per day in lower-demand months, rising to around £50–£80+ per day in peak summer or for larger vehicles. In major cities like Edinburgh and Glasgow, typical daily rates often sit around £40–£60 when averaged across the year, with even cheaper deals available if you book early and avoid airport locations.
If you are eloping in the Highlands, budgeting around £150-£250+ for Car Hire is realistic
Food & Drink – £30-60+ Per day
Food and drink are a big part of any romantic stay in Scotland, and couples are spoiled for choice whether they’re in the cities or the Highlands. In Edinburgh and Glasgow, you’ll find everything from relaxed pubs and cosy cafés to stylish restaurants showcasing local Scottish produce. A main meal in a pub or casual restaurant typically costs £12–£18 per person, while a mid-range restaurant is usually £20–£30 per main.
For drinks, a pint of beer in a city pub averages around £5–£6, especially in popular central areas. In the Highlands and rural towns, prices are often a little lower or similar, with pints usually £4–£5, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere that’s hard to beat.
If you’re self-catering, local bakeries, farm shops, and supermarkets make it easy to enjoy relaxed breakfasts and picnic lunches. On average, many couples spend around £60–£90 per day on food and drink, depending on whether they’re dining out once or twice.
From fireside pub dinners to intimate city restaurants, Scotland offers delicious, memorable dining for every kind of couple’s getaway.
Photographer £1800+
Photography and videography are often the heart of a Scotland elopement — because your images and film become how you relive the day for decades to come, there are many photographers and videographers to choose from and many different styles.
Photography
Good elopement photographers in Scotland with a track record, experience and local knowledge will charge from around:
- £1800+ for shorter coverage (around 3-4 hours)
- £2800+ (for full-day storytelling coverage (around 8-10 hours)
There will be more budget friendly options and overall experience, artistry, consistency and knowledge will all play a part in the final price, but it’s worth the investment, a good photographer does far more than take photos.
A savvy Scotland elopement photographer can:
- Recommend the best locations based on their past experience and previous location scouting, making sure the area fits with the couple’s vision
- Hit the best spots with the best light for the time of year/time of day, understand the weather/mountain conditions, cater for accessibility needs, and suggest private areas for ceremony
- Help build a relaxed, realistic timeline that flows naturally
- Suggest trusted local suppliers and accomodation based on their long standing connections
- Adapt plans when Scotland’s famously changeable weather rolls in and create good work in all conditions!
Because they know all the moving parts of the day, photographers often act as quiet planners — ensuring everything feels seamless and unrushed.
Videographer: £1800+
If you choose to include videography, costs typically range from £1800+ for a highlights type film (apx 3 mins) to £3500+ for a long form cinematic masterpiece (apx 8-15 mins).
Video can capture the emotion, movement, and atmosphere of Scotland in a way photos alone can’t — the wind, the laughter, the vows spoken out loud. Its definitely worth adding or considering this for your elopement.
Florals, Hair & Make-Up, and Other Suppliers: £300+
Even the simplest Scotland elopement can feel beautifully styled with a few thoughtful touches.
Florals
- Bouquet and boutonniere: £150–£400+
Florists often use seasonal, locally inspired blooms that feel natural in the landscape.Dries florals offer something rustic too and can sit really well in certain seasons.
Hair and Make-Up
- Professional hair and make-up: £175–£250+ per person
This adds a touch of luxury to the morning and ensures you feel confident in all weather conditions. Working with some of the best in the industry I know how important a good Hair & MUA team are and what they can bring to the day.
Other Optional Extras
- Ceremony arches or décor: £200–£600+
- Small cake or celebratory treats: £50–£200+
Most couples spend £300–£1,200+ on these finishing touches, depending on how styled they want the day to feel.

- Celebrant & legalities: £200–£1,500+

Total estimated cost (Excluding Flights/Travel to UK): £2950 – £8850+ ($4000-$12,000)
Your final budget depends entirely on what you value most — adventure, luxury, storytelling through photography and film, or simplicity.
